Native to Burgundy and notoriously fickle, the pinot noir grape has rapidly found a home away from home in New Zealand. With wine regions extending 1,600km from sub-tropical Northland on the North Island to the world’s most southerly wine region, Central Otago on the South Island, New Zealand boasts a huge diversity of climates and soils which are well-suited to pinot noir. This has helped facilitate the creation of a wide variety of very distinct and critically acclaimed styles of pinot.
This tasting gives members a rare opportunity to explore the influence of terroir on top-quality, mature New Zealand pinot from four different producers over two consecutive and highly regarded vintages. The Society has delved into its reserves for the 2013 & 2014 vintages of the following four pinots:
North Island
Ata Rangi, Martinborough
Schubert, Marion’s Vineyard, Martinborough
South Island
Burn Cottage, Central Otago
Pegasus Bay, Waipara, North Canterbury
Our guide for the evening will be the magnificent Jonathan Pedley MW – need we say more?
Thanks to the vision and prudence of the Cellarmaster in securing the wines at release, tickets are just £45 for members and £50 for guests. This reflects a significant discount to the current market prices of these wines and is fantastic value for wines of this calibre and maturity (several of which are no longer available on the UK market).
