“The sheer class of Austrian wines continues to amaze me” Jancis Robinson MW
We are delighted to welcome Anne Krebiehl MW to present this tasting of Austrian wines, with a focus on comparing and contrasting Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). Austria is the home of Grüner Veltliner and Austrian Riesling is up there with the best in the world. The tasting will include some of the top wines produced by Austria, from star producers such as FX Pichler, Bründlmayer, Schloss Gobelsburg and Emmerich Knoll. The tasting will show how these grapes prefer different sites, with Grüner Veltliner performing better on deeper, richer soils and Riesling performing better on rocky, poor slopes, predominantly on granite, gneiss and schist. The wines will also demonstrate the ageing potential of both varieties, with the FX Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg 2005 and Knoll Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg 2008 and the FX Pichler Riesling Loibenberg 2007 showing that these wines can age beautifully, taking on nutty and smoky aromas.
We are very fortunate to have good friend of the Society, Anne Krebiehl MW, presenting to us on these wines, given her expertise in Austrian wines. She has reviewed Austrian wines for Wine Enthusiast and is the editor for Austria for Vinous Media.
