Tuscany 2016 presented by Michael Palij MW
from £65.00

“There is little doubt that 2016 was a landmark vintage for Tuscan reds.” – Jancis Robinson MW

For many, the reasons why Tuscany is a favourite destination relate not only to its wonderful landscapes, stunning architecture, fascinating history and wonderful food, but also its fantastic wines.  While Bordeaux-blend Super-Tuscans stole the show for a while, increasingly attention is returning to beautiful wines based on Sangiovese, the traditional red grape of Tuscany, where there has been a significant increase in quality.  It is these wines that will be the focus of this tasting.  Chianti and Brunello need no introduction, but it is the makers of Sangiovese-based IGT Toscana wines, freed from some of the restrictions of the DOCG classifications, that are producing some of the very best wines.

Many thought that it would be difficult to surpass the quality of the wines from the 2015 vintage, with its long hot growing season, but the greater day/night temperature variation in 2016 appears to have produced wines which are even better.  As Italian wine guru Antoni Galloni described it, 2016 provided “Near-perfect conditions with long hours of sun, well-timed rains and no excesses resulted in relaxed, drawn out harvest under warm days and cool nights, exactly the conditions in which Sangiovese thrives”

The evening will be hosted by an old friend of the Society, Michael Palij MW.

The wines are:

Chianti Classico, Fontodi

Rosso di Montalcino Le Potazzine, Gorelli

Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Rancia’, Felsina

Querciabella Chianti Classico Riserva

Tenuta di Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Felsina Berardenga Fontalloro

Isole e Olena Cepparello

Montevertine

The majority of the wines for this tasting come from the Society’s stocks, providing great value for members. Member tickets are £65 and guest tickets are £70.
