An Icon of McLaren Vale – d’Arenberg with Chester Osborn

On Thursday, 4 November 2021 at 8:30pm (please note later than usual start time) we will be exploring the wines of d’Arenberg, an Australian icon and one of the oldest wineries in the McLaren Vale, which still remains in the hands of the founding family four generations later.  d'Arenberg manages to achieve that rare combination of producing some of the best wines made in Australia while at the same time providing fantastic value (and more readily available) wines at the other end of their range.  Their “Dead Arm” Shiraz, named after a condition that causes one side of the vine to wither but leaves the grapes on the other side more concentrated, has rightly won multiple awards. Of course, they also produce other fantastic red and white Rhone blends, a number of which are also award-winners.

We are thrilled to have once again as our presenter Chief Winemaker & Viticulturalist Chester Osborn, who is also the great-grandson of the founder, Joseph Rowe Osborn (a teetotaller!).  We know from his previous visit to the Society some years ago that Chester is a lively and engaging presenter, and we are very much looking forward to hearing him talk about his wines. Special thanks go to Chester for getting up at 7am (Australian Central Daylight Time) in order to speak to us!

The wines we will taste are the following:

The Money Spider Roussanne 2021

The Hermit Crab Viognier/Marsanne 2020

The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier 2016

The Ironstone Pressings GSM 2017

The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The Dead Arm Shiraz 2017

The Great Wine Co have kindly offered SWS members a 15% discount on the wines for this tasting.  Please insert the voucher code “SWS21” when you check out to take advantage of this discount.  You can buy all six wines, or only selected bottles, but it is worth noting that standard (five-day) delivery is free for purchases over £50.  And if you order further wine to make your order up to 12 bottles, a further 10% discount will apply.  In order to ensure delivery in advance of the tasting, the wines must be purchased from The Great Wine Co no later than Monday 25 October 2021.

Members and guests who attend the tasting do not have to purchase the wines in order to participate and could opt to taste similar wines during the tasting.

You are encouraged to use the ‘chat’ and Q&A’ functions of Zoom to raise questions for the speaker as you enjoy the wines.

We are very much looking forward to members and guests joining what should be a fantastic tasting.
