Rieslings of the World
Rieslings of the World
Riesling is one of the world’s great wine grapes. It is remarkably versatile and produces a phenomenal range of wines, from bone dry to sweet, and has the potential to mature to an extraordinary age. Generally late ripening and therefore less prone to Spring frosts than Chardonnay, Riesling is highly responsive to its “terroir”, exhibiting distinctive characteristics depending upon the soils upon which it is grown. In this tasting, we have the opportunity to compare and contrast 8 wines from some of the world’s leading Riesling producers, including Grosset, Pichler, Prüm (J.J and S.A.), Trimbach and Zind-Humbrecht. The wines fall into both the “dry” and “sweet” categories of Riesling, and the tasting will focus on the “terroirs” from which the wines are produced and the impact of the different soil types on the wines.
We will taste the following wines:
Framingham, F-Series Old Vine Riesling, Marlborough, New Zealand 2016
Bürklin-Wolf, Wachenheimer Riesling, Pfalz, Germany 2018
F X Pichler, Steinertal Riesling Smaragd, Wachau, Austria 2016
Zind-Humbrecht, Riesling Brand Vendange Tardive, Alsace, France 2006
Grosset, Springvale Riesling Clare Valley, Australia 2016
Joh Jos Prüm, Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule, Mosel, Germany 2006
Domaine Trimbach Riesling Frédéric Emile, Alsace, France 2011
S.A. Prüm, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Mosel, Germany 1999
We are privileged to welcome back the knowledgeable and entertaining Nancy Gilchrist MW, who will lead us through the tasting with a particular focus on the impact of the ‘terroir’ on the wines.
Tickets for this unmissable evening cost £45 for members and £50 for guests. As always, this represents stunning value for the quality and pedigree of the wines presented.
