South Africa

from £30.00

South Africa is one of the most dynamic and exciting wine producing regions in the world. South Africa has a long history of wine production, extending back to the 1600s, and during the 1700s and 1800s the dessert wines produced in Constantia were some of the most famous wines of their time. South Africa began to regain its international reputation for wine production following the end of apartheid, with the number of wineries and acreage under vine growing rapidly and with dynamic and often young winemakers producing wines from new regions.

While South Africa may be best known for its Chenin Blanc and Pinotage (South Africa's indigenous grape, which is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault), its reputation for other international varieties continues to grow. As we will discover during this tasting, producers in South Africa today produce a wide range of elegant and complex wines.

Greg Sherwood MW, who is making his debut presentation to the Society, is a leading authority on South African wines and will lead us through a hand-picked selection of some of the most interesting wines produced today. We will taste wines across several different varieties and styles, ranging from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir and Pinotage.

We will taste the following wines:

Whites
Naude Egg Chenin Blanc 2018
Brookdale Chenin Blanc 2018
Crystallum Agnes Chardonnay 2018
Savage White Blend 2018

Reds
Naude Cinsault 2017
Saurwein Nom Pinot Noir 2018
Abrie Beeslaar Pinotage 2017
Sons of Sugarland SH99 Clone, Reenen Borman (Boschkloof) Syrah 2018
